NEW PATIENTS
Here's What Your Pet's Visit Looks Like
Choosing a veterinarian is a real decision — and you deserve to know exactly what you're walking into. At Minnesota Veterinary Associates, you'll find a team that's been caring for central Minnesota's animals since 1929: thorough exams, honest guidance, and a staff that treats your pet like the family member they are. Here's what to expect when you come see us.
Your pet's annual exam covers a complete nose-to-tail physical — head, body, and all the parts your pet would rather you not look at. We check everything, so small problems get caught before they become expensive ones.
We'll also look at your pet's teeth. Most pets won't sit still for daily brushing at home, which means tartar builds up fast. A professional cleaning once a year protects against tooth loss, gum disease, and the pain that comes with neglected dental health. It's one of the most overlooked parts of a pet's care — and one of the most important.
Between visits, jot down anything that seems off — changes in elimination habits, mood, appetite, or energy. These small observations are often the first clue to something worth checking out, and they help us make faster, better decisions at your appointment.
Bring that notebook with you when you come in. Details that seem unrelated at home often explain a lot once we're looking at test results together. And if you ever need to switch clinics, a clear medical history saves everyone time.
The right vet is calm, clear, and willing to walk you through every step. Our team is built around that: qualified staff, a full surgical suite, digital radiography, and in-house lab work — everything under one roof in Melrose so you're not driving all over central Minnesota for routine care.
When anesthesia is needed — for a dental cleaning, surgery, or another procedure — we take it seriously. For older pets, very young animals, or those with health concerns, we'll typically recommend pre-anesthetic bloodwork and a chest X-ray beforehand. IV support and antibiotics may be part of the plan as well. We explain everything before we proceed, so there are no surprises.
When a procedure calls for more specialized expertise, Dr. Delhamer will refer you to a board-certified specialist in internal medicine, surgery, or emergency care. We stay involved throughout, so you're never left navigating that on your own.
